Rep. Ted Lieu is the latest cosponsor for HR 1522, the Puerto Rico Statehood Admissions Bill.

Lieu introduced the “Renewable Energy for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Act” along with Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon and Stacey Plaskett in 2019. It became law this year. He is a champion of climate action and environmental responsibility.

Lieu is also known for his commitment to human rights. He has a record of supporting disaster relief for Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, and spoke out strongly on the government’s delayed and inadequate response.

Cosponsoring HR 1522

Lieu is one of 60 Democratic representatives supporting the Puerto Rico Statehood Admissions Bill.

HR 1522 calls for Congress to offer statehood to Puerto Rico, since the Island voted for statehood last year. The 2020 plebiscite was the third status vote during this century, and the third vote for statehood.

Under HR 1522, the voters of Puerto Rico would be asked to ratify the statehood offer once Congress makes the offer. If the voters once again choose statehood, Puerto Rico would be admitted as the 51st state of the Union.

Puerto Rico has been a territory of the United States for more than a century.

Thank you, @RepTedLieu, for being on the right side of history! Your cosponsorship of HR 1522, the Puerto Rico Statehood Admissions Bill, is a blow for justice. Share on X
